Introduction (from the book Partnership Dancing™)

The dance has to fit the music.
~ Yoav Ashriel, Israeli Folk dance choreographer

Two People Dancing to the Music as One

Why are you partner dancing after all? You have other options. There are many dances you can do without a partner.

What are you getting that is unique to partner dancing?

In a word, connection.

Improvisational musicians talk about the ethereal feeling they occassionally experience where everything suddenly seems to click into place and the music soars way beyond what they had even thought possible.

The anticipation of the next magic moment can single-handedly drive a performer to keep playing night after night, year after year.
~ David Shenk, The Immortal Game, A History of Chess

In social dancing, everything clicks into place when you connect with your partner and the music.

The purpose of Partnership Dancing ™ is to give you the tools to consistently create those magic moments.

The Objective

Objective of Partner Dancing: two people dancing to the music as one.

Social partner dancing is for the sole pleasure of you and your partner.

Social Dancing is a Conversation.

When you dance socially with another person, you have a conversation about how the music makes you feel. Like any good conversation, you do not know what will happen next.

"Every once in a while, often when least expected, you may stumble upon a game of true grace and beauty, danger and cunning, temptation, treachery, and surprise after surprise after surprise".
~ David Shenk, The Immortal Game, A History of Chess

The conversation is ever-changing, challenging, unique and sometimes messy. That is the fun.

Responding to your partner and improvising to the music makes your social dancing feel meaningful and authentic.

The Challenge in Social Dancing

In social dancing you need to communicate with people who are not your regular practice partners, some of whom you may be meeting for the first time.

The challenge in social dancing is what can you communicate with a person who does not know your dancing well, to express what you feel in the music?

To meet this challenge you need a simple language that lets you improvise to the music.

What Is Partnership Dancing ™?

Partnership Dancing ™ is a method for easily communicating with any partner.

Partnership Dancing ™ provides you with one set of principles you can use to communicate in the same way with every person in every social dance.

Every signal is precisely defined so that you and your partner know exactly what is communicated under every circumstance with no ambiguity.

Partnership Dancing ™ intends to be the safest, simplest and most accurate possible method of communicating.

Social Dancing

Partnership Dancing ™ is only concerned with social dancing.

Partnership Dancing ™ does not address performance dancing. However, for competitions like Jack N Jills that test communication skills, Partnership Dancing ™ should give you a distinct advantage.

You can feel good when the onlookers applaud, but the only people you need to please when you are dancing socially are you and your partner.

Definition of Social Dancing: social dancing puts the social nature of dancing first.

You should be able to dance socially with someone you meet for the first time.

Your ability to communicate should depend only on your skills and should not depend on your partner being familiar with you or the both of you knowing the same patterns.

If you can only do certain moves with your regular partners, you have crossed into performance dancing.

Social Dance Choreography

To be able to dance with someone who is not your regular partner, you both have to know a common language. Partnership Dancing ™ proposes to be that language.

Even with a common language, there is a limit to what choreography you can communicate.

Definition of Social Dance Choreography: any choreography you can unambiguously communicate safely without having practiced with your partner beforehand.

All other choreography we call performance dancing.

Lead and Follow is Confusing

The social dance community has a commonly known name for how dance partners communicate, which is "Lead and Follow".

The problem is Lead and Follow is not clearly defined and therefore inadequate as an unambiguous method for communicating.

I have coined the name Partnership Dancing ™ to distinguish the method of communication described in this book from the commonly known name Lead and Follow.

Advantages

Partnership Dancing ™ is extraordinarily effective, able to communicate every step in every social dance.

While there are many excellent dance teachers, even the best dance teachers are handicapped teaching Lead and Follow.

Partnership Dancing ™ improves on Lead and Follow by being:

  • Clearly defined, precise and logical, so everyone understands exactly what to do.
  • Simple, easy enough that a normal person can easily learn how.
  • Universal, applying the same for all people in all social dances

Partnership Dancing ™ is also:

  • An equal partnership.
  • Fast, so you can communicate in time to music.
  • Free, allowing for the maximum freedom of movement.
  • Natural, based on how people naturally move and interact.
  • Respectful and comfortable.
  • Safe, eliminating injuries from falls and stress on joints.

Partnership Dancing ™ also provides for situations not available in traditional Lead and Follow.

Communicate Signals Visually

Partnership Dancing ™ explains how you can communicate signals visually. This opens new possibilities for improvising choreography while not physically connected.

Invent New Partner Dance Styles

Using the rules of Partnership Dancing ™ you can dance to any type of music and make up your own partner dance style.
